Honing & Polishing Dura-Metal Products Corporation has the equipment and personnel required to complete your precision Rotary Honing and Polishing requirements with confidence. We have the precision gauging necessary to complete close dimensional tolerance and roundness conditions. Most importantly, our skilled operators are dedicated to precision quality products. We perform both machine and hand operations, depending on need.

The Rotary Honing process is used to precision size many types of components including cylinder bores, hydraulic cylinders, and similar parts. The honing machine consists of fine grain abrasive stones attached to an expandable mandrel that is then slowly rotated and oscillated inside the cylinder bore. This operation is performed under an oil bath for lubrication and heat control until the desired finish and diameter are obtained.

External Honing is also available for work pieces up to 3.5" in diameter. We use super-abrasive stones as fine as 1200 grit to produce finishes to < 2 RMS microinch. External honing is facilitated by using fine grain honing stones mounted in a hand operated workholding fixture, which has precision infeed features. This operation is also performed under an oil bath for lubrication and allows precision diameter sizing and fine finishing of straight external diameters.

extrude hone machines
Extrude Honing (putty honing) is also available with up to a 10" cylinder. These machines can be charged with Aluminum Oxide, Boron Carbide or Diamond abrasives depending on work piece materials. The abrasive particles are carried in a puttylike material base and pushed via hydraulic cylinders through or around a work piece. This flow machining process generates smooth transitions for air and fluid flow or die configurations.  The process will completely remove all traces of machining operations.

Bench (handwork) Polishing operations are performed by skilled craftsperson's. These time-developed skills are essential to our precision work piece finishing operations. Precision benchwork includes the sizing and fitting of die and punch configurations. Additional procedures can include rotary operations using toolroom lathes to aid in the polishing process.

  • Ultrasonic hand controlled polishing
  • Rotary hand piece grinding and polishing
  • Hand lapping and polishing
  • Deburring and edge breaks
  • Plate lapping and polishing operations

Superfinishing to <1 RMS microinch mirror finish for parts up to 12" diameter and 40" in length. This process allows efficient surface polishing of round roll surfaces to precision requirements. The development of precision abrasive polishing films allows for repeatable results. The work piece is rotated and the abrasive film is advanced via a piston to contact the work piece. Once contact is made, the film is continually moving off of the feed roll and oscillated to facilitate the removal of material. The process typically includes many abrasive film changes to reach the desired end result. Each change is a planned succession moving to finer and finer abrasive and polishing films.

flat lapping machine

Rotary Flat Lapping to within 1 light band or <.00001". Dura-Metal can precision lap parts to 12" diameter. Slitter Knives can be precision sized to thickness specification & parallel tolerances of .0001". Diamond abrasive slurry is used to accomplish these stringent requirements on tungsten carbide and other ultra-hard materials. This machine operation consists of a precision dressed rotating lap table surface and hydraulic cylinders to apply pressure to the work piece material. The work piece is held in location on the lap plate inside of a carrier ring. The carrier ring is restricted to a specific location on the lap plate and actually rotates on top of the rotating lap surface. Pressure applied to the work piece by hydraulic pistons aids in stock removal. Stock removal rates can be timed to allow for size repeatability. The process under controlled operation will deliver consistent quality results.
